Health Is The Greatest Gift Contentment

From the Dhammapada, Verse 204, in the Sukha Vagga (Chapter on Happiness). The Pali original — "ārogyaparamā lābhā santuṭṭhiparamaṃ dhanaṃ, vissāsaparamā ñātī nibbāṇaṃ paramaṃ sukhaṃ" — lists four supreme values: health is the foremost gain, contentment the foremost wealth, a trustworthy companion the best kin, and Nibbāna the highest happiness. The Buddha spoke this verse to King Pasenadi of Kosala, who arrived after a large meal looking exhausted; it is one of the most reliably sourced of the popular Buddhist quotes, appearing consistently across major translations of the Dhammapada.
